China GP 2025 – McLaren 1-2 in the Tyre Strategy Game

Quick Recap:
Oscar Piastri cruises to his first ever lights-to-flag win in Formula 1. McLaren celebrates a dominant 1-2 finish, while the rest of the field remains fairly stable – with one big surprise: Haas manages to get both cars from P11 and P17 into the points. Tyre strategy was king today, and chaos? Not so much.

🚥 Qualifying Highlights:

  • Pole Position: Oscar Piastri
  • Top 4: Piastri, Russell, Norris, Verstappen
  • Surprise: Isack Hadjar with an impressive P7
  • Disappointment: Lawson down in P20 – do I really need to say more?

🔥 Key Moments:

The start? Straight into the action. Norris snatched P2 from Russell right into Turn 1, setting up a strong McLaren 1-2 early on. Behind them, the Ferraris jumped Verstappen – with Leclerc sacrificing his front wing’s left endplate in the process. Fun fact: the damaged wing seemed to work better than Hamilton’s entire Ferrari today. Time for the aero guys at Maranello to do some homework. 😉

Further down the field, Bortoleto parked it in the gravel, and Hülkenberg lost seven spots off the line. Tough luck too for Alonso – his brakes literally went up in flames, making it two DNFs in a row for the veteran.

By Lap 10, things calmed down. Most drivers who started on mediums focused on stretching their stint as long as possible. But no long run today – the first round of pit stops came between Lap 15 and 17, everyone switching to hard tyres.

And then? Classic tyre strategy poker. Most front-runners opted for a one-stop strategy – only Hamilton went for two. Not much happened at the sharp end after that, apart from Verstappen reclaiming P4 from the Ferraris and Tsunoda’s front wing exploding spectacularly. Shoutout to Bearman though – a few nice overtakes, securing P10 in the end.

Norris reported brake issues in the final laps but brought the car home safely – McLaren sealing the well-deserved 1-2.

🛑 Post-Race Update:

Turns out there’s still some drama left!
Gasly, Hamilton and Leclerc have all been disqualified – Gasly and Leclerc’s cars were underweight after the race, and Hamilton’s skid blocks (the bits responsible for those lovely sparks!) were too worn down. Tough luck, especially for Ferrari, losing valuable points.

⭐ Driver of the Day:

Oscar Piastri
First pole, first lights-to-flag victory. Calm, confident, clinical – that’s all there is to say!

❌ Loser of the Day:

Jack Doohan
Still looking out of his depth – kept the stewards busy today with messy moves and time penalties instead of points.

📊 Championship Standings (Top 3):

  1. Lando Norris – 44 points
  2. Max Verstappen – 36 points
  3. George Russell – 35 points

🔜 What’s Next:

Two weeks off now. Next stop: Suzuka, April 4-6 – always a calendar highlight if you ask me. Classic layout, proper racing.

Fun Fact

Michael Schumacher’s fastest lap in Shanghai from 2004 still stands unbeaten in 2025. Records are meant to be broken – but some legends just stay legendary.
